The question “How well do you feel your current role aligns with your skills, interests, personality, and values?” is an introspective coaching prompt aimed at helping individuals reflect on their job fit and overall satisfaction. It encourages self-awareness and self-reflection, prompting the coachee to evaluate their role in terms of:
- Skills: Do they feel their abilities are effectively utilized in their current position?
- Interests: Does their work align with what they are passionate about or enjoy doing?
- Personality: Does the role suit their personal traits, work style, and preferences?
- Values: Are the role and the organization in alignment with what the individual values most in their career and life?
How to use it in workplace coaching:
- Setting the context: Present the question during a coaching session when discussing career satisfaction, role alignment, or career growth. It’s particularly useful during performance reviews or personal development discussions.
- Encourage reflection: Ask the coachee to think about the alignment between their current job and these four key areas. Give them time to reflect and journal their thoughts.
- Use D.E.E.P framework: Apply the D.E.E.P. (Download, Explain, Explore, Progress) coaching model to guide the conversation:
- Download: Ask the coachee to share their initial thoughts and feelings about the alignment.
- Explain: Clarify the reasons behind certain practices or processes within the organization, which may be driven by intentional decisions, historical factors, or other influences.
- Explore: Dive deeper into any areas where there are misalignments. Explore potential solutions or alternatives.
- Progress: Identify actionable steps to either improve the alignment (e.g., skills development, changes in role) or make adjustments to their job for better satisfaction.
- Follow-up: In subsequent coaching sessions, revisit this question to track changes in how they feel about their role, assess progress, and continue refining alignment.
This question fosters a deeper understanding of the coachee’s needs and provides an opportunity for meaningful discussion about personal and professional growth.
