R.O.M.A.N. Training Day 1: From Managing Tasks to Managing People

What does it really take to become an effective People Manager?

On Day 1 of our R.O.M.A.N. (The Role of a Manager) training programme, participants explored two essential pillars of effective management: Roles & Responsibilities and Orientation (Self and Team Awareness).

The focus was on helping participants understand that becoming a manager is not simply about taking on more responsibilities. It requires a shift in mindset, from managing tasks to leading, understanding and developing people.

Understanding the Roles and Responsibilities of a Manager

Being a manager is more than assigning tasks, monitoring performance and ensuring deadlines are met. It involves providing direction, communicating expectations, making decisions, building trust and enabling others to succeed.

Participants explored the key responsibilities of a manager, including organising work, leading others, communicating effectively, collaborating and adapting to changing situations.

The emphasis was on recognising that a manager’s success is measured not only by personal performance, but also by the performance and development of the people they lead.

Orientation: Understanding Yourself Before Leading Others

One of the most important lessons in people management is that you cannot effectively manage others without first understanding yourself.

Through personality and team awareness activities, participants explored how their natural traits influence their communication, decision making, leadership approaches and relationships with colleagues.

They also discovered that people have different motivations, working preferences, strengths and potential blind spots.

Understanding these differences enables managers to move away from a one size fits all approach and develop more effective ways to engage, support and lead their team members.

Day 1 Learning Outcomes: What Participants Take Away

By the end of Day 1, participants were equipped to:

  1. Understand their roles and responsibilities: Recognise the expectations of a manager and distinguish between managing tasks and managing people.
  2. Develop greater self awareness: Identify their personality traits, natural strengths, behavioural tendencies and potential blind spots that influence their management effectiveness.
  3. Understand their team members better: Recognise differences in personalities, motivations, communication preferences and working styles.
  4. Improve interpersonal and communication skills: Appreciate how different people interpret messages and respond to management approaches, enabling clearer communication and fewer misunderstandings.
  5. Adapt their management approaches: Understand why different team members may require different levels of guidance, encouragement, autonomy and support.
  6. Build trust and stronger working relationships: Apply empathy, respect and awareness of individual differences to create a more supportive and collaborative team environment.
  7. Make the transition from Task Manager to People Manager: Shift their focus from simply completing work to enabling people to perform, grow and contribute to shared goals.

From Task Manager to People Manager

Technical expertise may help someone become a manager, but people skills determine how effectively they lead.

Day 1 reinforced a fundamental principle: Effective people management is not about getting everyone to think and work like you. It is about understanding how different people work and bringing out the best in each individual.

When managers understand themselves, they become more conscious of their own actions. When they understand others, they become better equipped to communicate, motivate, coach and lead.

This combination of self awareness, team awareness and practical people skills forms the foundation of effective people management.

The ultimate goal is not simply to become a better manager of work, but to become a better leader of people.

And that is what Day 1 of R.O.M.A.N. is all about.

R.O.M.A.N. is a management development programme designed to equip managers with the awareness, skills and practical approaches needed to lead people and achieve organisational excellence.
