Developing Future Leaders: How JCU Student Marketeers Achieved a 51% Boost in Team Awareness
On 4th April 2026, student leaders from James Cook University (JCU) gathered for a highly engaging Student Marketeers Leaders Training, designed to equip them with one critical capability for leadership success — understanding self and others.
While many leadership programmes focus on skills and knowledge, this session took a different approach. It focused on behavioural awareness, powered by IDENTI3 profiling and AI-assisted insights, creating a deeply reflective and practical learning experience.
Why Self-Awareness Alone is Not Enough
At the start of the session, participants rated their own levels of:
- Self-understanding
- Understanding of their team mates
The results revealed a familiar leadership gap:
- Self-understanding: 53.3%
- Understanding of others: 37.8%
This reflects a common reality — many emerging leaders may know themselves to some extent, but struggle significantly more when it comes to reading and working with others.

A 51% Breakthrough in Team Understanding
By the end of the training, the shift was both clear and powerful:
- Self-understanding increased to 88.9% (+35.6%)
- Understanding of team mates increased to 88.9% (+51.1%)
The most significant transformation was in team awareness, where participants experienced a 51.1 percentage point improvement.
This is critical because leadership is not just about knowing yourself — it is about navigating people, differences, and dynamics effectively.

The Role of AI in Accelerating Insight
One of the unique aspects of the training was the integration of AI as a reflective tool.
Rather than replacing human thinking, AI was used to:
- Guide structured reflection
- Surface behavioural patterns
- Provide alternative perspectives
The response from participants was strong:
- 88.9% rated AI accuracy 8/10 or higher
- 66.7% rated AI usefulness 8/10 or higher
This shows that when used correctly, AI can become a powerful enabler of self-discovery, especially for younger leaders who are naturally open to technology.

From Awareness to Application
Beyond insights, participants walked away with practical takeaways:
- Communicating more effectively with different personalities
- Recognising behavioural differences in team settings
- Adjusting their approach to build stronger collaboration
The session was described as:
- “An amazing experience”
- Insightful and engaging
- Practical and relevant to real-life situations

100% Satisfaction — But More Importantly, Real Impact
All participants rated the training 8/10 or higher, reflecting strong satisfaction.
However, beyond satisfaction, what truly matters is measurable impact:
- Significant improvement in both self and team awareness
- High confidence in applying learning
- Strong engagement with AI as a developmental tool

Building the Next Generation of Leaders
The JCU Student Marketeers Leaders Training demonstrates an important shift in leadership development.
Today’s leaders need more than knowledge. They need:
- Clarity of self
- Understanding of others
- Tools to continuously reflect and improve

By combining behavioural science with AI, this programme provides a scalable and effective way to develop these capabilities early.
Final Thoughts
Leadership is not about control — it is about understanding.
When young leaders gain clarity about themselves and the people around them, they are better equipped to:
- Build trust
- Collaborate effectively
- Lead with confidence
The results from this training are clear —
when insight is structured, and reflection is guided, transformation can happen in just a few hours.
